A smoothie is a preparation method, not a health claim. It can be a useful breakfast or snack, or it can become a very large sweet drink. The difference is what goes in and how much you pour.

A five-part builder

  1. Whole produce: start with vegetables and whole fruit rather than juice. Frozen produce is practical and reduces waste.
  2. Protein: add plain yoghurt, milk, fortified soy milk, tofu or another suitable protein source.
  3. Fibre and texture: use oats, chia, linseed, nuts or seeds where suitable.
  4. Liquid: add only enough water or milk for the texture you want.
  5. Flavour: use cinnamon, ginger, cocoa, mint or citrus zest before reaching for syrups.

Three starting combinations

Berry oat

Frozen berries, plain yoghurt, rolled oats, milk or fortified soy milk, and cinnamon.

Green mango

Spinach, frozen mango, cucumber, plain yoghurt and water. Add ginger or lime zest for brightness.

Peanut banana

Banana, milk or fortified soy milk, plain yoghurt, a spoon of peanut butter and oats. Check nut allergies first.

Why whole fruit still matters

Australian guidance recommends a variety of nutritious foods from the five food groups and limiting added sugars. Healthdirect notes that fruit juice without pulp lacks fibre, while Eat for Health describes whole fruit as more filling and generally a better choice than juice. Blending whole ingredients keeps more of the food structure than straining juice, but it can still make a large quantity easy to consume quickly.

A practical portion check

Build the smoothie from ingredients you would comfortably eat in one sitting, then stop when the glass is full. If it replaces a meal, include protein and a source of fibre or healthy fat. If it is a snack, scale it down.
